Loving Shepherd, we feel the wolves close at hand. Gather us to yourself, that we might dwell secure in your ways. Deliver us from evil, that we might build a community where all may dwell secure. Mark our fellowship with study, prayer, communion, and the sharing of our possessions with those in need. Amen.

Affirmation of Faith                              UMH 881

Apostles’ Creed (Traditional Version)

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;*
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic** church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

 The pastoral prayer  & The Lord’s prayer

Gracious God, we come to You today in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and

Savior! This morning, we ask your help and your care for us and for our world again.

In this time of COVID-19, we ask that when we aren’t sure, God, help us be calm;
When information comes from all sides, correct and not, help us to discern;
When fear makes it hard to breathe, and anxiety seems to be the order of the day,
slow us down, God;
Also, help us to reach out with our hearts, when we can’t touch with our hands;

Help us to be socially connected, when we have to be socially distant;
Help us to love as perfectly as we can, knowing that “perfect love casts out all fear.”

For the doctors, we pray,

for the nurses, we pray,

for the technicians and the janitors and the aides and the caregivers, we pray,
for the researchers and theorists, the epidemiologists and investigators,
for those who are sick, and those who are grieving, we pray,
for all who are affected, all around the world…
we pray for safety, for health, for wholeness.

O Lord, may we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked and house those without homes; may we walk with those who feel they are alone, and may we do all that we can to heal the sick— in spite of the epidemic, in spite of the fear.
Help us, O God, that we might help each other.

We pray all these things in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray;

“Our Father who art in heaven.  Hallowed be Thy name.  Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen!

Scripture lesson                          John 10:1-10

1 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.

7 Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Offertory prayer                                 In Unison

Holy One, touch us with the awe that came upon those early disciples, as they beheld the signs and wonders performed in their midst by the apostles. May the gifts we offer this day be a remembrance of their commitment to share all things in common. In Jesus’s name, we pray. Amen!
